5th Street

FIFTH STREET was one of Camden's original streets, running south to north, with a few major interruptions, from Newton Avenue to just west of Pyne Point in North Camden.

Do you have a Fifth Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

SUBMARINE FIRE- Burning bilge oil in the partly dismantled submarine Narwhal at the Quaker Shipyard and Machine Co., Fifth and Byron Streets, was extinguished by Camden firemen. The Narwhal, and her sister ship Nautilus, docked nearby, were involved in the sinkings ofr 28 Japanese ships, including the carrier Kaga at the battle of Midway. The yard was dismantling 13 subs. An acetylene torch started the blaze.

REALTY MAN GUILTY OF HOLDING UP RENT

A North Camden real estate dealer was. found guilty of withholding rent collections at a meeting of the New Jersey Real Estate Commission in the court house building yesterday.

D. Jamieson, of 106 North Fifth street, trading as the Jamieson Real Estate Co., was charged with retaining money due to Mrs. Marie Lafferty, of 424 Tyson Street, owner.

The commission, headed by Edward J. Borden, newly chosen president, ordered Jamieson to make restitution.

Joseph Munger, of 3302 River Avenue, charged with operating a real estate business without a license, was ordered to obtain a state certificate.

Munger, who stated he owns 22 properties, testified he was chiefly interested in selling his own holdings and promised to procure a license.

Borden, who presided at the first regular meeting since taking office, was given an informal reception.

Napoleon B. Aaronson & Family

Camden Democrat - June 16, 1860
West Jersey Press - December 16, 1868

Philadelphia Inquirer - February 5, 1902

Usually referred to as N.B. Aaronson, Napoleon Aaronson and sons opened  a flour and feed store at 236 Federal Street in Camden in the spring of 1860. The 1860 Census shows him in Camden's Middle Ward and Directories show him at 21 North 5th Street from 1863 to 1867. The family consisted of N.B.  Aaronson, wife the former Sarah Ann Chew, and children Frederic, John, Sarah and Mary, and one relative of his wife.

In the summer of 1861, with the country engaged in Civil War, N.B. Aaronson and his son Frederic answered the nations call. When the Fourth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment was raised in August, N.B. Aaronson was appointed Captain of Company F, and Frederic was appointed First Lieutenant. In 1862 he saw action at the Battle of Gaines Mill, where he apparently was one of the 400 men captured. He and Captain John Reynolds were exchanged for Confederate officers in August. Now commanded by Colonel William B. Hatch, from August 26 to September 2 the Fourth New Jersey was part of General John Pope’s campaign in Northern Virginia, which culminated on August 30 with the Second Battle of Bull Run, and the ensuing Union retreat to  Centreville. On September 6 General McClellan began a campaign into Maryland. On September 14 the regiment and its sister units in the First New Jersey Brigade took part in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap. The monument there reads:

"Late in the afternoon the Brigade advanced from the fields north and west of Burkittsville, charged up the mountain, carried this point, and followed the enemy to the west foot of the mountain. Loss in the Brigade 40 killed, 134 wounded."

On September 16-17 the First New Jersey Brigade too part in the Battle of Antietam.  The Brigade arrived upon the field from Crampton’s Pass about noon, and was formed for a charge upon the Confederate line just North of the Dunkard Church. The order for the charge was countermanded, and the brigade took position across this road, in support of the 6th Corps Artillery, the right of the brigade in woods North of the road, the left in the open field South, where it remained, under artillery fire, until the morning of the 19th.

Captain Aaronson resigned his commission on September 22, 1862. He returned to Camden, and briefly did some work for the State government in 1865. His wife died in December of 1868 and he appears to have left Camden shortly afterwards. He lived for many years in Hammonton, New Jersey before returning to Camden after the 1900 Census to live with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Messick, at 322 Spruce Street, where he died on
February 1, 1902.

HENPECKED CAREER RESULTS IN DIVORCE
Complaining Husband Moves Court With Recital of Woodshed Ouster

If there's such & title as World's Champion Henpecked Husband, then John Thearl, of 310 South Fifth street, lays claim to it.

Speaking in a low voice, which frequently quavered as he told of the indignities allegedly heaped upon him by his wife, Thearl, who is in his 50's, made a crowded courtroom gasp numerous times as he poured his tale of woe into Advisory Master Linwood L. Erickson's ears yesterday, alleging cruel and barbarous treatment. The suit was not contested, and Thearl received recommendation of a divorce decree.

Thearl said he was a widower with three daughters, and his wife a widow also with three daughters, when they were married July 3, 1926 in Gloucester. His wife, Mrs. Ethel Thearl lives at 609 Powell street, Gloucester.

Thearl said his daughters did not come to live with him because "they were not welcome." His wife's daughters, however, he said, did reside with them at the Powell street house, which he said had been left to his wife by her first
husband. He said he left his wife a year ago.

"I was never given a key to the house," he testified. "My wife frequently told me she had buried the man she loved. Once when I tried to kiss her she scratched my face.

"I earned $32.50 a week and brought my pay home regularly, but all I got was an allowance of $2 a week. Once when I was laid off for a short time my wife ordered me to get out, telling me I couldn't 'hang around here.'

"On one occasion, in July, 1928, I came home one night from a meeting and found myself locked out. My clothes were in the woodshed.

"My diet consisted of coffee, bread and butter for breakfast; a sandwich for lunch and 1 often would go without supper. But the rest of the family lived well because I would look in the refrigerator and saw they had other foods.

"One night I came home hungry and went to the refrigerator. My wife barred my way. She asked me what I wanted. I told her I was hungry. Then she picked up an umbrella and struck me. She told me I was no better than a dog around the house.

"I was ostracized and no one spoke to me, although I tried so hard to make things go.. I became ill, my nerves were shattered and I had to see a doctor. I came to the limit of my endurance last February 27. I was alone in the house. That's when I decided to leave my wife."

534 South 5th Street had the interesting story. The city came and claimed the block to build a school and offered all the residents money. My mom was a hold out and they came on the last day with a wrecking ball! So we moved to an apartment on Line Street and in 1966 to Cherry Hill.

I am including a picture of a trowel with the Feriozzi name on it and a picture of my kindergarten graduation class from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in 1953. I also saw that my Uncle Miff (Alfred) Arcaini's friend Nino Marcozzi posted a picture from in front of my Arcaini grandparent's house at 329 Beckett. It's heartbreaking to see Camden the way it is today, but I have great memories of Camden the way it was when I was a kid. I remember walking down Broadway with my Dad going to the movies with him and seeing Santa at Hurley's. I also remember the grocery store on the corner of 5th and Spruce, Falconiero's. Fred owned it and Pauli was his son. I remember Pauli's daughter Sandra would come over to our house dig in the dirt with me when we were 3 or 4.

I was born in Camden in 1947, father Dominic Arcaini"Mimi" from 329 Beckett. Mother, Helen Feriozzi Arcaini of 905 South 5th Street. We lived with my grandprents, Ernest Feriozzi who owned and operated Feriozzi Construction Company and my grandmother Maria, Mary, Feriozzi. We all lived at 905 South 5th until my grandfather moved all of us to 521 Spruce in about 1953 which became the base for the construction company. I don't know how long prior to my birth they owned the house on 5th street, but the 1940 census had my grandparents and all of their children living there. The children (my uncles) were Anthony (Tony), Oswaldo(Ozzie), and Guido. My mother was Helen and my aunt was Adriana(Adri).

ENTERTAIN P.-T. A.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Howard Todd, of 921 South Fifth Street, are entertaining at a buffet supper tonight at their Summer home at Taunton Lakes for the teachers and members of the executive board of the Liberty-Starr Parent-Teacher Association of which Mrs. Todd is president. The association has raised enough money through card parties to purchase glasses for 32 children with defective eyesight in the two schools.

LICENSE OF DRIVER FREED, IS REVOKED
South Camden Man Cleared of Tipsy Charge to Again
Permit

A South Camden man, convicted in police court of drunken driving, but acquitted on his appeal to Judge Samuel Shay, will seek reinstatement of his driver's license which was revoked officially today by Motor Vehicle Commissioner Harold G. Hoffman.

The man, Sylvester Tazcinski, 1477 South Tenth Street, was arrested April 28 by Motorcycle Policemen Edward Shapiro and Thomas Kauffman after Tazcinski's car is alleged to have sideswiped Kauffman's motorcycle. They followed the car to Tazcinski's house where they found it parked. The policemen told Judge Shay on Tuesday they were unable to testify Tazcinski was driving and the judge released the defendant after saying he was convinced Tazcinski was drunk.

William Mazzare. 922 South Fifth Street, arrested April 16 after his automobile crashed into parked cars at Mt. Ephraim and Kaighn Avenues also was deprived of his license. Mazzare was fined $220 by Police Judge Pancoast on April 17.

Edward T. Cheeseman, Ashland road, Magnolia, arrested April 17 after a chase of more than two miles, also lost his license. Cheeseman was halted by Camden police a few feet from the closed gates of the Reading Ferry.
