FOURTH STREET was one of Camden's original streets, and over the years expanded far beyond its original length, now running south to north, with few interruptions, from Chelton Avenue to Pyne Point in North Camden.

Do you have a Fourth Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

2 Camden families displaced by blaze

CAMDEN

Two families were displaced after a two-alarm fire ripped through a home Monday in Camden.

Police and fire officials responded to the blaze at 915 N. 4th St. about 5:25 p.m., police said. The fire started in a garage in the back of the home, police spokeswoman Teresa Sicard Archambeault said. Residents of the home and of an adjacent house were displaced, Archambeault said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Miss Avery Is Bride At Church Ceremony

Miss Evelyn Jeanette Avery's marriage to Howard D. Summerfield on Saturday was one of the interesting church weddings of June. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Avery of 904 North Fourth Street, and the bridegroom a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Summerfield, of 318 Byron Street, this city.

The seven o'clock ceremony took place in the Epiphany Lutheran Church, Seventh and Market Streets, with the pastor of the church, Rev. Paul C. Weber officiating. Merrill Hallowell will play the wedding march and accompany Mrs. Lois Bausman in vocal numbers.

Mr. Avery gave his daughter in marriage. She wore a white crepe gown made en train, a lace jacket made with leg o'mutton sleeves. A tulle veil, cap fashion, was caught with orange blossoms. Her flowers were bride roses, lillies of the valley and baby breath.
Miss Ruth Shaw of this city, was maid of honor and the bridesmaids were Miss Ruth Avery, Miss Florence Summerfield, sisters of the bride and bridegroom, and Miss Helen Hobson, all of Camden. Miss Shaw was gowned in blue point de sprit, pink picture hat and pink shoes. Miss Avery wore pink point de sprit with blue accessories, Miss Summerfield, green point de sprit with yellow accessories and Miss Hobson yellow with green accessories. Each attendant carried a bouquet of Spring flowers. The bride's small sister, Jean Avery, as flower girl wore a frock of white georgette and taffeta. She carried pink sweet peas and baby breath,

William McKinney, of Gloucester Heights, attended the bridegroom as best man and ushers were Milton Avery, Charles Kendall and George Hand, of Camden.
Mrs. Avery, the bride's mother, appeared in blue triple sheer crepe and Mrs. Summerfield in maize silk crepe.

On their return from a motor tour of New England, Mr. and Mrs. Summerfield will receive, after July, at 2234 Thirty-seventh street, Pennsauken. Both the bride and bridegroom are graduates of Camden High School.

DRIVER GIVEN 15 DAYS AS HE ADMITTED DRINKING

When he admitted he had been drinking prior to an automobile accident in which his car figured, Joseph Carlton, 27, of Magnolia, was fined $50 by Judge Pancoast in police court yesterday. Unable to pay the fine, Carlton was sentenced to serve 15 days in the county jail.

Complaint was made by Walter J. Patton, 601 North Fourth Street, driver if the other cart, who testified the collision occurred last night at Kaighn Avenue and Locust Street.

In addition to being jailed, Carlton appeared to have "gotten the worst" of the accident, for his head was bandaged as he came to court.

3 BOYS ARRESTED, ONE AS BURGLAR
Others Captured on Roof of Vacant House; Oldest 13

Three small boys were arrested last night as lawbreakers.

John Greely, 13, of 419 Cedar Street, charged with malicious mischief and breaking and entering, was arrested by Detective John Kaighn on complaint of Carl H. Brummer, of 629 Clinton Street, manager of an American Store at Fourth and Elm Streets, who said he found the boy hiding in the cellar of the store.

The other boys, Victor Linkletter, 13, and William Hoy, 12, both of 506 Penn Street, are charged with trespassing. They were arrested by Detective Sergeant Gustave Koerner and Detectives Kaighn and Frank Crawford, who from windows of the detective bureau in new city hall, said they saw the boys on the roof of a vacant three-story building at 427 Market Street.

Climbing up the rear of the building they said they cornered the boys hiding behind a chimney, apparently planning to enter the building.

All three will be arraigned in police court today.

Bridge Board to Take 27 Properties as Safety Zone for Rail Underpass
FOURTH STREET HOUSES BETWEEN MAIN AND LINDEN CONSIDERED
Valuation Last Year Set at $133,875, But May Go to $110,000 for 1933

LANDMARKS INCLUDED

Twenty-seven properties, some of which are landmarks of generations past, are to be acquired by the Delaware River Joint Commission to make way for the proposed North Fourth Street underpass beneath tracks of the Camden bridge rapid transit line.

The properties extend along both sides of Fourth Street, from Linden to Main. Their 1932 valuation totaled $133.875 but recent general reductions in assessment for 1933 may cut this figure to $110,000.

Curtis' Old Home

In explaining the condemnation proceedings to be taken, Joseph K. Costello, secretary to the joint commission, said that a commission, composed of Camden real estate men, will be appointed to value each parcel of property involved. The owners will be reimbursed at whatever figures the commission sets. The properties are occupied mostly two and three-story houses.

The most valuable piece of property affected is the Linden Apartments at Fourth and Linden streets, assessed at $10,525. Although the building, which once was the home of Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Philadelphia publisher, faces Linden street, it is listed as 401 North Fourth Street

Largest of the parcels is the 25 by 95-foot property of Genevieve A. Toram, at 417 North Fourth Street assessed at $7750. The others range from $3225 to $6000. Two other properties in the neighborhood may be acquired at Fifth and Linden Streets, where the high-speed line subway will swing south on Fifth Street. Engineers have not however, decided whether they will be needed.

The properties in question are 430 and 432 Linden street, assessed respectively, at $5975 and $7800. 432, because it is on the southwest corner, is more likely to be taken, according to Costello. It is owned by Harry L. Warren. George W. and Lillie H. Tasch and C. Rolf and Eleanor T. Stanley own in equal shares the building at 439 Linden street.

According to plans of Ralph Modjeski, bridge engineer, the Fourth Street underpass will begin at Linden street and end at Main. A similar tube will be constructed in Philadelphia on Fifth street, from Cherry street to Callowhill at a total cost of $1,112,300. The Camden underpass would cost only $275,000, Modjeski estimates, including a separate tunnel for pedestrians.

The Camden underpass is necessary because under Modjeski's plans the high-speed line will reach street level at the West side of Fourth Street and cross to enter the ground in a curve toward Fifth Street.

Underpass Seen Necessary

Unless the underpass is constructed, it would be necessary to block all traffic on Fourth Street. Fifth Street already is shut off because of the bridge and eliminating Fourth Streett would seriously interfere with vehicular travel between North Camden and the central section of the city.

Fourth Street will remain a two-way thoroughfare and because of the necessity of building four-foot walls topped with large railings to protect pedestrians and motorists against the danger of falling into the ramp, the Fourth Street properties will have to be tom down, it was explained by Costello.

This added width, Costello said, will permit the free flow of traffic to Pearl street. Fourth Street, from curh to curb, will measure 76 feet, with the underpass in the center measuring 28 feet from the insides of the walls and 36 feet overall. There will be 8 10-foot sidewalk on each side which will make the distance from building line to building line 96 feet.

The surface traffic lanes, northbound on the east side of the underpass and southbound on the west side, each will measure 20 feet.

These measurements will mean the destruction of 18 feet of the properties required.

Owners of other properties and their assessed valuations, are listed in the city tax office as follows:

401 Linden street- South Camden Trust Company, assessed at $6000 (property occupies all of east side of Fourth Street, running north to property owned by joint commission on Pearl street; all other addresses listed are on North Fourth Street).

The Fourth Street Tunnel
UNDER THE BRIDGE - JULY 5, 2004

While you can drive a car under the Ben Franklin Bridge at street level from North 3rd Street east, at 4th Street there is a tunnel, closed in the early 1980s, that provided amusement for generations of local kids on bicycles, and aggravation for most adults responsible for public safety. At 5th Street there is a pedestrian tunnel, which is still in use.

2 views of the 4th Street tunnel, looking South. Note the cobblestone paving, and the stairway leading up to the pedestrian walkway on the bridge.

Boys and girls from North Camden would take advantage of the ramps to roller skate and bicycle in days gone by. Imagine THAT in 2004! Thanks to Earl Crim, Jim Bessing, and John Ciafrani for talling me about the tunnel.

"You had to cross the railroad tracks on Main street to go or come from tunnel. There were no rail crossing gates, just a railroad crossing with blinking lights and a bell. A lot of guys would hop those boxcars for a short ride. That was a fun trip, but dangerous."

STORES, HOMES LOOTED; RADIO, PENNIES TAKEN

Burglars who broke into two stores and a private home Thursday night got exactly $2.50, a radio, and some cigars for their trouble.

At the store of Basile Constantine, 402 Berkley Street, cigars valued at $1.50 were stolen by the intruders, who forced a rear shutter. Michael Kelly, of 11 South Fourth Street, reported his store was broken Into and $2.50 in pennies stolen. Entrance was gained through a rear window. James Hayes, of 1287 Decatur Street, told the police his radio set was stolen by the thieves after they entered his house through a rear window.

Detectives Clarence Arthur and Clifford Carr are investigating..

PHONE CALL DISPROVES MAN'S STORY IN COURT

Harry Bolt, 35, of 337 South Fourth Street, might have "gotten away" with his story in police court yester day if Judge Pancoast had not received a telephone call.

Charged with beating his wife, Bolt told the court that his wife did not wish to press the charges and would not appear against him.

"Is that so?" the court asked.

"Your wife notified me through a friend that she was sick in bed from the abuse you gave her and intended to make the complaint when able to get here."

Bolt was held in $500 ball for a hearing today..

SHOT MANGLED DOG

The report of a shotgun at Fourth and Senate Streets late on Saturday attracted crowds to that corner. A mongrel dog of the neighborhood, which had a hind leg cut off by an automobile, was shot. The automatic of motorcycle patrolman George Frost mercifully put the half-staved canine out of its misery.

CITY EMPLOYEE IS FREED IN GUN-CARRYING CASE

When Paul Genovese, 48 years old, of 613 South 4th Street, a city gardener, was arraigned in police court this morning on a charge of carrying concealed deadly weapons, he told Judge Bertman he did not know it was illegal to carry firearms. Sentence was suspended after a severe reprimand.

Genovese was arrested Sunday night at Third and Washington Streets by Policeman Gus Koerner. The case was postponed to produce additional witnesses.

In court this morning Koerner said he found Genovese chasing another man with the gun. The policeman said Genovese was intoxicated.

Bertman rebuked the defendant and told him that just because he was a city employee and wore a badge he was not entitled to carry a gun and blackjack. In suspending sentence he told him he could not carry a weapon at any time in the future under any circumstances without the proper permit .

I grew up going to 4th Street every Sunday to my grandparents, 716 South 4th Street. Salvatore and Anna Giglio, my grandparents that owned that home. They are referenced on Mount Carmel boosters.  (Mr and Mrs Salvatore Giglio) Maryann Giglio and Emanuel Giglio were their children. My father worked at Allied Chemical... Vtec was where my grandfather worked.

I went to the corner store at 4th and Pine every Sunday but I think I was "playing the numbers" for my grandmom!  I always had a piece of paper with numbers on it that I handed to the owner behind the counter and then my 3 siblings and I got Breyer's ice cream on cones and left.

Horseshoes was always played on the sidewalk.  They would hammer the stakes into the crack on the sidewalk and I remember they made a lot of racket while we all watched.

My stepmothers dad (grandpop ) had a large hardware store with old gas pumps outside at 4th and Walnut Streets in South Camden.  Antonio Biasi was his name. He emigrated from Italy, married Margaret Vespe, had  4 daughters and one son.  He also had greenhouses and a store at 8th and Van Hook Streets.  My dad and mother later took over the greenhouses and store as Matty's greenhouses in the 60's.

My Aunt and Uncle lived at this house; my Maternal Grandparents did as well. I was amazed to see that the house was built in 1879; I had no idea it was so old. It was back in the early 1960’s was the last time I was in the house; my Uncle passed on Jan 9, 1960 and I do not remember my Aunt remaining in the house long after that. My Grandmother passed at my Aunt Mary’s home on Dec 31, 1963, so I know she didn’t remain in the house either.

On South Fourth Street - 1966

Once upon a time back in 1966 when I was 10 years old, I lived at 1038 South 4th Street and that would be five houses away from Bert's or Wimpy's luncheonette. And that's where the South Camden gangsters would hang out. Bookmakers and loan sharks did business right on the corner where I used to watch them from my stoop on hot summer days. I used to go down the corner when my father Joe was playing cards around "Chicken Asses" club next to Chestnut Fuel yard, and play the pinball machine inside of Wimpy's were I became a great at it.

My father Joe would pull me out of Wimpy's and tell me "get back on your stoop, because I don't want you around these guys because there a bad influence on you". I didn't understand my father until I got older, and every chance I got to play the pinball machine I did only this time I would play "Jimmy Ezzi" for a dollar a game, highest score wins. I sometimes would come home 10 dollars a day and maybe sometimes 50 dollars a week beating Jimmy Ezzi. My father didn't know I was making this money gambling like him, until he seen my money rolled up inside a glass jar on my dresser and questioned me about this fat roll of all one dollar bills of about $50.00. Sometimes I think it was more then my father had in pocket from losing playing cards.

My father made me give the money back to Jimmy Ezzi, because he told me that money you won from him is "dirty money" and I'll explain when you older. As I kept sneaking down the corner off my stoop, a moment of lifetime happened when Jimmy Ezzi was showing off his wife' diamond ring to his crew near the sewer when Jimmy dropped the diamond ring and fell down into the sewer. As I was coming out from Wimpy's or Bert's luncheonette I heard my name being called, "Yo 'Nails'", my nickname because I was a tough kid growing up, it was Frankie DiSalvio letting me know Jimmy wants you over near the sewer.

I went over to Jimmy Ezzi and said "What do you want?"

Jimmy said to me that his wife's diamond ring fell down into the sewer and I need you to go down there and get it for me and I'll give you 100 dollars if you find it. Me being 10 years old it sounded like it was hitting the jackpot, so with the help of Boscco, Frankie, Jimmy, Shotsie, and Stumpy they opened the top lid of two sides and held my hands and lowered me into the sewer. At first I thought their was rats down in the sewer, and I mean not human rats, but it was just dirty rainwater and empty cans and bottles, not too bad. So I started feeling the bottom of the sewer and it was maybe about a foot a dirty water my hands were in fishing for this diamond ring, when suddenly I felt something like a ring when I picked it up and saw it was a diamond ring. I yelled up to the guys and said I found it, I put the ring into my pocket and raised my hands so they can lift me out of the sewer and slowly Jimmy and his crew brought me back up onto the sidewalk.

Jimmy Ezzi asks "Where is it?". I went into my pocket and gave him the ring is when Jimmy went into his pocket and gave me a twenty dollar bill. I looked at it and said "Is that all for fishing in the sewer for the ring?" Jimmy took the twenty dollar bill back took out a wad and gave me a one-hundred dollar bill or one yard in street talk. All this was going on while my father was playing pinnacle at "Chicken Ass's" club, so he thanked me and asked me if I want to play pinball and win some more money from him.

I said "Thanks but no thanks, I gotta get home because it's dinner time and my father would be coming home soon." I got home and got some Ajax and scrubbed my legs and hands And then came my father into my room and heard what I did and what I got for risky business with Jimmy Ezzi.

My father then brought me back into Wimpy's and had me return the one hundred dollar bill back to Jimmy and said "I don't want my son around you and your crew so leave him alone". That's when I saw Frankie hit my father with a stool on his back. I wanted to defend my father, but I couldn't because who they were. The following week they dumped Wimpy's son Shadow's body on the front step of the luncheonette.

It was just another day on 4th and Chestnut Street. I saw plenty from my stoop to the corner, but that's another South Camden tale not a Bronx tale!!!!!!

My Grandfather started his first and only shop on South 4th Street in Camden. The shop  closed up after his passing in 1964. He was a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, and a member of  its Italian Holy Name Society. When I was a kid, I remember going with him to one of his long time customers house, who was confined to a bed for a while. A free haircut and shave was provided free at no charge . The 50th Anniversary Book of his parish was placed on this site in his memory."

Wants Camera For Soldier

To the Editor:

My husband has been overseas for 15 months. He is stationed in India. He wants a camera. I don't know where to get one. Maybe your kind readers could help me. I would like to find a Brownie, 120, because they take large pictures. In India, they don't enlarge pictures.

I also lived at 406 Mechanic Street and have a picture of it when it was a dry cleaners. I remember the bar at 400 Mechanic Street. being called "Mommy Scullbuster's". My dad took me in there to see the Joe Louis vs. Jersey Joe Wolcott fight on TV.

JEANETTE DI CARLANTONIO
(1927 - 2011)

She was born on March 9, 1927 in Camden, one of the five children of Melanina Di Camillo and Pompilio Bocchicchio of 1803 S. 4th Street (across the street now from our new theatre). She was baptized at Mt. Carmel Church, Camden on September 4, 1927. She attended Mickle and Hatch Schools. During the war, she worked in the Camden Cigar Factory and Croft Mill. She married Carlo DiCarlantonio of Winslow Street on June 21, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Sal Adamo listening to their vows. They were blessed with four children: Martin, Michael, Carla and Fran and they were raised at 1735 S. 4th Street. She lived so much of her life in the Waterfront South neighborhood before moving to Mt. Ephraim. Her husband died in 2007 and his funeral Mass was here celebrated by Fr. Michael Doyle. She died on February 22, 2011 and the family called to have her funeral mass here as well. Fr. Dennis Bajkowski led her Mass of Christian Burial last Saturday, February 26, 2011. Our sympathy to her children, her seven grandchildren, and all who loved her. May she rest in peace!

I was born and raised in Camden. My name is Vincenzo Buttari III. I was born at 2025 Fillmore Street then moved to 1902 South 4th Street. I remember playing as a kid in the old brewery. I still to this day look for all memorabilia. I'm related to the cop [Clifford] Del Rossi. People ask me if I'm from South Philly because of the way I talk. I tell them I used to chew those guys up and spit them out, I'm from SOUTH CAMDEN. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I tell her that is who I am.
