CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY
STANLEY'S CAFE
1901 South 4th Street
Stanley's Cafe was another of the bars licensed in 1934 after the repeal of Prohibition. The bar was located at 1901 South 4th Street in Camden's 8th ward. In the same neighborhood that housed the Howland Croft & Sons Mill, the McAndrews & Forbes Company licorice factory, and the Eavenson & Levering wool scouring plant, the bar was also not far from the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyards. The bar was operated in the 1930s by Nunzio Milano. By 1947 he had sold the bar to Stanley Zawoyski. Nunzio Milano would go on to operate a restaurant at 909 South 4th Street in the 1940s. According to the City Directory for 1947, Stanley Zawoyski lived with his wife Eva at 1823 South 7th Street, while a family member, Dymitro lived over the bar with his wife Tekla. By 1959 Dymitro Zawoyski moved to the South 7th Street address. Dymitro Zawoyski passed away in September of 1964 at the age of 75. By 1967 Stanley Zawoyski had moved to 908 Merrick Avenue in Westmont NJ. Stanley Zawoyski operated his bar until 1973. The Zawoyski family remains in Camden to this day. Last a resident of Collingswood, Stanley Zawoyski passed away on July 30, 2012 at the age of 95. |
