William
Guthridge

WILLIAM GUTHRIDGE was born in New Jersey in December of 1854 to Mr. and Mrs. John Guthridge. His father worked as a gardener.

William Guthridge became interested in local politics at an early age, and it gained him an appointment to the Camden Fire Department in April of 1876. He was hired as an extra man with Engine Company 1, quartered at 409 Pine Street. William Guthridge took the place of William Schwaab and was replaced in turn one year later by John Chew.

The 1878 Camden City Directory shows William Guthridge working as an iron moulder and living at 427 Walnut Street. When the 1880 Census was taken, John Guthridge was a widower. The family, which included William, younger children John, Deborah, Richard, and Thomas, as well as a niece, Mary, lived at 427 Walnut Street. He worked as a gardener through most of the 1880s. The 1890-1891 Camden City Directory gives his occupation as florist, but he is not listed having a shop.

William Guthridge was active in local politics in the 1890s. He was appointed Fish and Game Ward by Governor Werts on April 19, 1892. He was again appointed by the State Fish and Game Commission in April of 1895. He was still working in that capacity as late as November of 1907.

William Guthridge was still living at 427 Walnut Street as late as 1896. The 1900 Census lists him at 412 Cherry Street, living with his wife of 7 years, Lena, and a step-son, George Kates, 22. The City Directory for 1906 states that he lived at 341 Spruce Street. He moved to Audubon shortly after the 1906 Directory was compiled.

William Guthridge passed away on June 18, 1908 at his home in Audubon, New Jersey. His widow, Mrs. Lena Guthridge, was then living in Mullica Hill, New Jersey. She died in November of 1915.

William Guthridge's sister-in-law, Mary Guthridge, the wife of his brother Thomas, was active in local politics, serving on the Camden County Board of Freeholders from Camden's 7th Ward. She was the first woman to take a seat as a Camden County Freeholder, joining that body in 1930 and serving through at least 1931. Thomas Guthridge served as a member of the Camden Police Department in the 1900s and 1910s. Brother John Guthridge also served for a time with the Camden Police, as a special officer.
