LOUIS
BOOTH HUMHRIES was born on January 14, 1859. He was one of seven children of
Charles S. Humphries and the former Caroline Fetters, and
grandson of Richard
Fetters, one of Camden's leading citizens. Charles S.
Humphreys started out as a sign paper but soon gained a
reputation as an artist. Two of his works hang in the National
Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. The first of
the five Humphreys children was born in 1846. Probably from the time of his marriage and definitely from 1867 to 1878,
the Humphreys family lived at 41 North Third
Street, Camden. Louis Humphreys was the fourth of the five
children, coming after Charles F., who was an
officer in the United States Navy and who died at the age of
36; Eveline, who died in infancy; and George W. Humphreys
who became an insurance
broker in Burlington, New Jersey. The fifth child, Ella F.
Humphreys, married Dr. Harry
H. Pemberton, of Long Branch, New Jersey. Louis
B. Humphreys stayed in Camden and in his time was one of the most
successful and important insurance and real estate brokers in
the city, with offices for many years at 230-232 Market
Street. The business was carried on by his son, Louis B.
Humphreys Jr. and was still a going concern into the
1960s.
