HOWARD W. CAREY JR., known about Camden as "Junie" and "Coach" Carey, was born October 16, 1939. He attended public schools in Camden and graduated from Camden County College, where he began his career working with young people in the city. In 1971 Howard Carey became the Sports Director for the City of Camden. He served on the city's Planning Committee Advisory Board from 1973 to 1983 during which time he was twice elected Chairman. As the Mayor's Youth Council Director, he organized the only Midget Football League in Camden, with 10 teams. He also was involved with the founding of a 24 team Little League Baseball circuit, and a 20 team Women's and Men's Softball League. He also worked for the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, retiring after 20 years of service. Howard Carey married Emily Edwards. The Carey's had three children, Ronald "Magic" Carey, Larry, and Sophia. As early as 1980 and until the end of his days he lived at 312 South 27th Street in East Camden. Pre-deceased by his son Ronald, who died in August of 2003, Howard W. Carey passed away on October 10, 2007. He was survived by his wife, two children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. |
