FRANK BERTHOLD OPPECKER SR. was born September 8, 1895 in Austria-Hungary. He came to America at age 12. Musically gifted and trained on the violin, by the 1920s he was a member of the faculty of the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, and was giving music lessons to students on his own in Camden by 1927. Frank B. Oppecker married around 1922. The Oppeckers had bought a home at 451 Carteret Street by 1924, when son Frank B. Oppecker Jr. was born. By January of 1928 his wife Louise had bore another sons, Joseph. A daughter, Evelyn, came later. Both sons would follow their father into music. Frank and Louise Oppecker would remain at 451 Carteret Street into the 1960s. They had moved to 1081 Morton Street in Camden by October of 1970. Frank B. Oppecker Sr. remained a Camden resident until his death in August of 1985. Frank B. Oppecker Jr. taught in the Camden public school system for 31 years and was active in other musical pursuits in the area until retiring to Athens, Georgia in 1986. |
