ELLEN JANE LEARY was born Ellen J. Frame to George and Ellen Frame on April 17, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was one of at least 10 children, coming after siblings Sarah, Robert, George, John, Harriett, William, Edward and Walter and before brother Charles. The family moved to New Jersey shortly after the Federal Census enumeration of January 1920. Charles was born not long after the family came to the Garden State. The 1930 census shows the Frame family renting a home at 830 Haddon Avenue in Collingswood NJ. By the beginning of 1938 they had moved to 525 North 6th Street in North Camden. In February of that year, Ellen Frame married George Albert Leary of 650 Berkley Street in South Camden. The Learys were living at 67 Penn Street when the 1940 City Directory was compiled. By 1943 the family had moved to 101 Penn Street, where they remained through 1947. The marriage brought five children- four sons Herbert, Clifford, George, and Elmer; and a daughter and Elma. Elmer Leary and Clifford Leary became career police officers with the Camden Police Department, while son Herbert C. Leary went to the Camden Fire Department, where he reached the rank of Chief of department before his retirement. As of 2008 her grandson, Herbert Leary, is currently serving with the Camden Fire Department. Ellen Leary was last a resident of Milmay, New Jersey. She passed away on December 21, 2007. |
