Mrs. Ryan was in her 80th year. She was born February 10, 1854. For more than 52 years she had resided in North Camden and had seen that section of the city develop from a purely residential section to one of industrial activity. Nor had she ever lost interest in that transformation of her adopted city, for it was here she came shortly after marrying James J. Mr. Ryan died 20 years ago.

Mrs. Ryan was the daughter of the late John Dougherty and Esther Porter Dougherty. While a young girl she lived in Brooklyn, with her parents who later moved to Moorestown and Colestown. It was while Ellen was a young woman there that she met young Ryan and they were wedded. In all the intervening years, Mrs. Ryan had resided here, had reared her family of seven children all of whom are living. She was among the older residents of North Camden.

The children are Edward, Frank H., managing editor of the CourierPost newspapers; Thomas R., sports editor of these newspapers, and George R., Mrs. Mary Shivers, Miss Anna W. and Miss Esther Porter Ryan.
