DR. WILLIAM HUSTON IRELAND was born in Mays Landing NJ in 1844 to Richard S. Ireland and his wife, the former Mary J. Lake. The family had moved to Millville NJ by the time the 1860 Census was enumerated. He was first educated at the Pennington Seminary in Pennington NJ. Returning to South Jersey, he studied medicine under Dr. E. B. Richmond, of Millville NJ, then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of medicine, from which he graduated in 1867. Dr. Ireland practiced medicine in Millville and at Dividing Creek, before moving to Camden in the fall of 1870. A specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, he served as County Physician for three years, and was an instructor at the Training School for Nurses. He was affiliated with the Camden City Dispensary. Dr. Ireland taught as an instructor at the Camden Training School for Nurses and at the Medico-Chirurgical Medical College. He was a member and served terms as president of the Camden County Medical Society and the Camden City Medical and Surgical Societies, and also belonged to the Camden City Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Ireland was married to Anna Belle Jones. The Irelands had three daughters, Loretta F., Mary Lake, and Anna B. Ireland. Dr. Ireland and his family were living at 611 North 2nd Street when the Census was taken in 1880. They appear in the Camden City Directories from 1887 through 1891 as living at 330 Cooper Street, and he was also noted at that address in the 1897 Biographical Review. Dr. Ireland also is noted in the 1890-91 Directory at 226 Vine Street in North Camden. When the Census was taken in 1900 the Irelands were living at 330 Cooper Street. Daughters Loretta and Mary Ireland were already teaching in the Camden public school system. Also residing with the family was Dr. Ireland's widowed mother. The Ireland family belonged to Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church at North 5th Street and Cooper Streets. Dr. Ireland passed away in 1904. Daughter Loretta Ireland served for over 30 years as a teacher and principal in the Camden public school system. |
