DR. SAMUEL SUMTER BUTLER was born in Salem County, New Jersey in 1885. He received his education at the Kittanning Academy and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and  Science. Dr. Butler married Elsie Spence around 1911. He was practicing medicine and operating a pharmacy at 449 Kaighn Avenue by 1914.

By the mid-1920s Dr. Samuel S. Butler was operating a drugstore at 1100 Kaighn Avenue, the south-east corner of Mount Ephraim & Kaighn Avenues, where Dr. Paul N. Litchfield had practiced medicine and pharmacy at this location from the early 1900s through his death in 1918. Dr. Butler also owned an apartment building at 1104-1110 Kaighn Avenue. Dr. Butler then lived at 309 E Bettlewood Avenue in neighboring Oaklyn NJ with his wife and sons Samuel Jr. and Horace.

Dr. and Mrs. Butler still resided in Oaklyn in 1947. He also had an office there, and was practicing medicine with his son Horace. Samuel Jr. had become a dentist. 

Dr. Samuel S. Butler passed away at some point after 1956.
