BENJAMIN SCHATZ was born in New York on December 10, 1897, the son of Israel Schatz and his wife, the former Lena Pegarmer, Jewish immigrants from Russia. The Schatz family had come to Camden during the 1910s, and at the time of the 1920 Israel Schatz was the proprietor of a restaurant, in which son Benjamin was the manager, daughters Kate and Sarah waitresses, and George worked in the kitchen. Two other sons, Jacob and Philip, were still in school. The family resided at 210-212 Arch Street in these years.
Benjamin Schatz married Anna Rosen in Philadelphia in 1921. During the 1920s they moved to Westville, New Jersey where they opened up a grocery at 13 Third Avenue, which was still open well into the 1940s. There were four children, Harold, Elaine, Gloria, and Leona. Although they resided in Westville, they still maintained ties to Camden's Jewish community. Daughter Leona met her future husband, Harold Wachsman at a dance at the Talmud Torah hall on Kaighn Avenue.
Benjamin Schatz passed away in Burlington, New Jersey on September 20, 1982.
Benjamin Schatz's younger brother, George Schatz, went into the auto repair business in Camden in 1924. The business. eventually known as George's Auto Service, was quite successful, and was a South Jersey institution into the 1980s.
