McBurney

ANDREW McBURNEY was born September 28, 1921 in New Jersey, the son of Anthony McBurney and his wife, the former Margaret Smith. The McBurney family, headed by grandfather John McBurney. a baker by trade, moved to Cramer Hill from Pennsauken not long after the 1910 Census enumeration. The family resided at 3257 River Road in 1914. By June of 1917 John McBurney had passed away. By that time the family had moved to the block bounded by North 35th Street, Farragut Avenue, and North 36th Street. Anthony McBurney was working as a carpenter at Cramp's Shipyard and living at 1189 North 36th Street at that time. His older brother Samuel lived next door at 1187. Anthony McBurney served with the United States Army during World War I, after which he came back to Cramer Hill and started his family.

By January of 1920 the McBurney's lived in three of six homes on the above-mentioned block, 1166 North 35th, 3532 Farragut Avenue, and 1191 North 36th Street. The three remaining houses on Farragut at that time wee occupied by the Rettberg family at 3508 Farragut, their son Arthur was well known as a boxer; the Adam Kelhower family at 3516, and the Albert Schofield family at 3518.

Anthony McBurney had married Margaret Smith and settled at 1191 North 36th Street, adjacent to his brother Robert, widowed mother, and maternal aunt Mary Butler. Their first child, a daughter named Evelyn had recently been born, and Margaret's brother Samuel Smith, then 11, also lived there. Andrew McBurney arrived on September of 1921.

April of 1930 the McBurney family, which included older sister Evelyn and younger brother Robert, lived at 3415 Harrison Avenue in the Cramer Hill section of Camden. The elder McBurney was then working as a rigger at an oil refinery, most likely the refinery on nearby Petty's Island. Another child Bernice, came later.

After serving in the armed forces, Andrew McBurney joined the Camden Police Department on September 16, 1948, along with Thomas Ewanichak, Charles Trostel, Edward Troutman, Nicholas Pavlak, Arthur Jones, Joseph Kane, Walter Bobson, and Harris Wilkerson. He advanced through the ranks and had been appointed Acting Lieutenant by February of 1962.

Last a resident of Cherry Hill NJ, Andrew McBurney passed away September 9, 1999.

Customers Flee
Shop After Blast

A sawed-off shotgun, fired at point-blank range through a plate glass window scattered several customers and employees at the Little Bitts sandwich shop, 940 North 2nd street, at 7:00 PM Thursday.

Patrolman Edward Ingram and William Lewis said the gunman, described as a Puerto Rican, fled on foot.

Proprietor Mrs. Lillie Ott, 45, and helper Edward Schwartz, 48, of 6367 Ditman Avenue, Philadelphia, escaped injury from flying glass and pellets as did a group of teenage customers, police said.
